Intertek and Zero partner to accelerate the transition to synthetic fuels
London, United Kingdom: Today, Intertek, a leading total quality assurance provider to industries worldwide, announced its partnership with Zero Petroleum (“Zero”), the pioneering energy company developing groundbreaking synthetic fuels for a fossil-free future, that is backed by Formula One legend Damon Hill OBE.
With over 135 years of experience in the fuel industry, Intertek understands the important role of synthetic fuels in global defossilisation. In the race to reach Net Zero and beyond, the development of carbon neutral alternatives to fossil-based fuels is vital, and this partnership is an important milestone on the journey to achieve scalable sustainable fuel solutions. Synthetic fuels eliminate greenhouse gas accumulation through the creation of a circular carbon cycle, and so eliminate the need for fossil fuels. By choosing to partner with Zero as its first entry into the new market, Intertek has further validated the pathway for the transition to synthetics.
Zero® synthetic fuels, made from just air and water, are a breakthrough in the transition towards cleaner energy sources. These advanced fuels are designed to be used as direct replacements for traditional petroleum-based fuels in various applications, including transportation, aviation and agriculture. There are currently around 1.5 billion cars, lorries and trucks, 30 million ships, 40,000 aircraft, 100,000 locomotives and 100,000 sea vessels in the world. With their 100% drop-in capability, Zero® synthetic fuels can seamlessly integrate into such existing engines without the need for modifications or adaptations. As part of this unique partnership, Intertek will support Zero to accelerate the development and certification of its 100% drop-in, synthetic fuels that will power the engines of the future.
This strategic and commercial partnership builds on several years of successful collaboration between Zero and Intertek. Intertek first supported Zero’s project with the UK’s Royal Air Force to secure the Guinness World Records® title “first aircraft powered by synthetic fuel” in 2021. Through this partnership, Intertek and their state-of-the-art laboratories and specialised facilities will play a crucial role in assessing the fuels’ composition, emissions, and compliance with rigorous industry standards and regulatory requirements. The fuels will provide tangible advantages to industries and consumers, enhance energy security, and foster the transition to carbon neutrality.
Paddy Lowe, Founder and CEO of Zero said: “We are extremely pleased to partner with Intertek and believe that continuing to leverage their world-class testing and certification capabilities will significantly contribute to expediting the development, scaling and ultimately the deployment of our 100% drop-in synthetic fuels. They provide a gold standard in quality assurance that will help us to revolutionise the way we power the future”.
André Lacroix, CEO of Intertek said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Zero on their exciting journey to revolutionise the future of fuel. As a purpose-led company, Intertek strives to make the world a better and safer place by bringing quality, safety and sustainability to life. Our World of Energy business brings together more than 135 years of energy industry expertise, innovations and broad-based specialist services. Helping organisations across the energy landscape to address their complex sustainability requirements is core to our mission, and we are proud to be partnering with Zero to help develop and scale new synthetic fuels for commercial use.”

About Zero ZERO. FUEL REINVENTED. Zero Petroleum (“Zero”) is a breakthrough energy company that develops and manufactures whole-blend synthetic, non-biological fuels – petrol (gasoline), diesel and jet fuel – in a completely fossil-free process, using just carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen from water. Zero’s proprietary DirectFT® fuel synthesis process has demonstrated industry-leading fuel quality and production efficiency. Synthetic fuels (e-fuels, efuels, electrofuels, power-to-liquids, PtL) are fully sustainable and circular in material, they retain the critical energy density of liquid fuels, and they can be manufactured at unlimited scale, therefore providing the only solution to the total de-fossilisation of the majority of transport sectors including aviation, heavy transport, marine and agriculture.
Zero recently opened the world’s first fully featured synthetic fuel plant (Plant Zero.1) in Bicester, UK. They have plans to build a commercial-scale plant which is to begin production in 2025. Website zero.co | Twitter @ZeroPetroleum | Instagram @zeropetroleum | LinkedIn zero-petroleum
